Symposium
Purpose for the Symposium on Telescope Science:
To provide a forum for astronomical researchers, of all levels, who are interested in providing and/or using astronomical measurements from electronic instruments to plan, discuss and share their work within the astronomical community.
NOTE !!! - The 29th Symposium on Telescope Science will be held Tuesday May 11th - Thursday May 13th 2010 with concurrent workshops at the Northwoods Resort in the City of Big Bear Lake.
The Northwoods Resort is an elegant mountain resort offering full amenities. Enjoy and learn in comfort and style.

As in the past, the program will be separated into workshops and paper sessions. The program for the 29th symposium 2010 is in preparation, a schedule of speakers will be available in April, 2010. Amateurs and professional astronomers will discuss the use of CCD cameras, software, hardware, and the latest CCD, photometric and spectroscopic techniques. If you want to know more about photometry, astrometry, spectroscopy, CCD imagining and the newest hardware and software techniques, this is the conference for you! Several workshops will be presented on Tuesday prior to the SAS Symposium.

Workshops
We will hold two workshops on, Tuesday, May 11. The cost of these workshops
is $50 with a registration cut-off date of May 5, 2010.
Olivier Thizy, president of Shelyak Instruments – manufacturer of the
LIHRES III and Star Analyzer spectrographs, will give a workshop on
spectroscopy that will have two parts. First, using IRIS and VisualSpec, participants
will measure the temperature of stars using raw low resolution spectra. Then, using VisualSpec, participants will
measure line profiles in a high-resolution spectrum and determine their
astrophysical meaning.
Participants are encouraged to download the freeware VisualSpec and bring
their laptops for these hands-on exercises.
The second workshop will be given by Richard Berry, co-author of the
popular image processing book and software, The Handbook of Astronomical Image
Processing. The workshop will be a hands-on workshop with the participants
divided into 5 groups. One person in each group will be asked to bring his CCD
camera and control computer to be used by the group. Controlled light sources will
be provided to each group for these measurements.
Most of us typically have an idea about the gain, read noise, bias,
linearity, dark current, conversion factor and uniformity of our cameras, but
how many of us have actually measured these parameters? By attending this
workshop you will not only learn how to perform these tests on your camera but
what each parameter means and what effect it has on your images.
Call for Papers
If you are interested in submitting a paper and giving an oral presentation
about it, email the program committee at program@socastrosci.org. Your abstract
must be received by 00:00 UT, March 14, 2010. Final papers are due no later
than 00:00 UT, April 11, 2010 at (and not a second later!).
Abstracts should be 200-400 words. Papers can be submitted using MS Word®
or Open Office. A sample style document is available at this web page. Poster
papers are gladly accepted. If you can put them in the form of a multi-page
document or a single page PDF, they can be included in the proceedings as well.
Printed proceedings that include all
papers/posters received before the deadline will be distributed at the meeting.
If you have any questions, please
send an email to the Program Committee at program@socastrosci.org. Unless
otherwise requested, all abstracts and full papers will be submitted to
SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS). Abstracts and full papers for
2003-2008 and the 2009 abstracts are already available on the ADS.
The Society for Astronomical Sciences solicits sponsors and vendors for the Symposium. Vendors are encouraged to provide compact displays that will be attractive and interesting to the symposium attendees.
Sponsors of the Symposium have all the privileges of the Symposium Vendors described above and in addition will receive highlighted exposure in advertising brochures, symposium banners, symposium web sites, and may, at the discretion of the Symposium Chairpersons, be invited to provide keynote addresses at planned dinners.
